This newsletter is a bi-annual update where we check in with our clients and colleagues and provide updates and insight into the McCarthy Legal practice.

From our Director’s desk.

I am still struggling to believe that we are already more than half way through this year – for me, a strong reminder that I need to start seriously looking at completing the projects that I’ve had on the back-burner. As McCarthy Legal’s first year of (official) practice – the support from both local and international clients and colleagues has been overwhelming – so to you, Thank You! We look forward to seeing what the next 6 months, and 60 years, will bring.

McCarthy Legal in the news.

Our director, James McCarthy was featured in the March/ April edition of the Mail and Guardian. The article is based on a lecture that James gave to the National Science and Technology Forum earlier this year where he discussed Non-Fungible Tokens in relation to Intellectual Property Rights and the use of the blockchain to facilitate such rights. Practice update.

McCarthy Legal is weeks away from registration as a practicing firm, (as opposed to a legal consultancy). What does this mean? We will be spending more time in court and will be able to offer our clients (and colleagues not based in Cape Town) this service. Watch this space!!

While we are a small practice, and sometimes unable to assist on all matters that we receive – we do know who the best attorneys are in a particular field and often refer work to those in our network. We only refer work to those attorneys that we know personally and who subscribe to our ethos of affordable, top quality legal work, so we are a good starting point for any legal issue that you may have.

Some interesting cases on the go.

This year we have been involved in some notable cases – while some settlements we are under a Non-Disclosure Agreement and are thus not at liberty to brag about, some cases we are…

We have been directly involved in the tokenizing (think NFTs) of a PTY LTD – This is the first time that it has been attempted in South Africa and is an effort to raise capital by selling fractions of a company. The financial compliance red tape has been an interesting minefield to navigate but we are very happy to be at the forefront of such a movement.

In our most recent cross boarder engagement, we have facilitated the creation of Dutch companies in order to provide employment for semi-skilled South Africans in a European market where these skills are lacking. This is a double win for us as we are a small part of a solution to our current unemployment crisis.

Covid update?

Nah, we are all as tired as you are of COVID. That said, the #workfromhome culture has allowed us to service clients from all over the world right here from our offices (and sometimes coffee shops) in Cape Town.

Socials! We have recently revamped our Instagram and Linked-In pages for those that want to keep an eye on what we are up to!
